Bio: Ethel was born at 1 Duddery Road, Haverhill in 1892 and baptised at the Old Independent Church, Haverhill, the next year.

The 1901 census shows Ethel living with her parents and brothers Cecil Frank, Stanley and John at Chess Lane, Witham, Essex, where their father Frank is working as a stockman on a cattle farm.

On the 1911 census, Ethel is 18 and working as a domestic servant at Asheton Farm, Tysea Hill, Stapleford Abbots, Essex. The head of the household is Farmer, James Stobo, 36, who was born in Lanark, Scotland. His wife Jannett Stobo, 34, is from Rochford in Essex. They have a son James, 7, and young daughter, Janet, 1, who were both born in Stapleford Abbots.

Frank and Priscilla and the three brothers are living on the old Brentwood road near Garlesters Farm in Bulphan, Romford, Essex.

Frank, Cecil and Stanley are cowmen on a farm. A boarder, Albert Cole, 20, groom, is also living with them.

Ethel married Harry H Alexander in 1914 in Willesden.(3) He appears aged 18 on the 1911 census living with his parents Charles Alexander and Elizabeth, and younger sister Daisy, 16, at Rose Cottage, Stapleford Abbots. Harry and his father are gardeners. Harry's birthplace is given as Edmonton, Middlesex.

On the 1939 Register Ethel is shown living as a housewife at 3 Towneley Cottages, Tysea Hill, Ongar, with husband Harry and son Cecil Frank. Ethel gives her birth-date as 8th October 1892 which doesn't tally with her baptism register entry. Harry, born 2nd November 1891, is working as a postman, and son Cecil is a timber merchant's labourer(4).

Ethel died in 1981 in the Epping district(5). Her GRO death entry gives the d.o.b. which appears on the 1939 Register, rather than on her baptism entry.

Thanks to Ethel's granddaughter Jean Griffin for information about her husband and children.
