Bio: Charlotte Whiting's baptism entry has not been located, but circumstantial evidence points to her being the daughter of James Whiting and Catherine Hilsdon, born about 1787 or possibly earlier.
Charlotte had an illegitimate son, William, born on 11th Mar 1810 and baptised on 12th May 1810 at St Mary, Haverhill. The father was given as John Suttle, labourer (5).
When she married John Suttle of Withersfield, on 19 Apr 1811, one of the witnesses was Stephen Whiting, son of James and Catherine Whiting. Both he and Charlotte used the distinctive spelling 'Whitting', here, which seems to be shared by other children of James and Catherine on their marriage entries.
It seems the couple relocated to Withersfield, where John was originally from, and had a number of children here from 1813 onwards.
Charlotte and John Suttle lived in Withersfield and they are seen here on the 1851 census living near the White Horse inn. John, 63, is an agricultural labourer, Charlotte is said to be 64, and they have two children still living with them; Ann, 30, and James, 18, both born in Withersfield. (2)
John Suttle died aged 82 in 1867(4) and Charlotte appears as a widower, aged 73, living in Withersfield with son James on the 1861 census (3).
Charlotte Suttle of Withersfield, supposedly aged 83, died and was buried at Withersfield St Mary on 22nd Sep 1867.
