Bio: Annie Emily was the first child of Arthur Whiting and Emily Kiddy, both of Haverhill, but who had married in Southampton for some reason that remains unclear. Although Arthur's service records show that Annie was born on 5th March 1910 and the 1939 Register confirms this, it seems that Arthur had married Emily in Southampton on the 25th April 1910, seemingly over a month after Annie was born. However, Annie's birth was registered in the Risbridge district in the second quarter of 1911. Given that since 1875 births had become legally required to be registered within 42 days of the event, it seems most likely that Annie was born in 1911 even if two other sources state 1910.

After their marriage in Southampton we find them back living at 126 Burton End, Haverhill with Annie on the 1911 census. Annie is shown as being two months old here, which would seem to confirm her birth year as 1911.

Arthur is a labourer. Arthur enrolled in the Royal West Kent regiment when war broke out, and his military service records show the details of his marriage, and also mention three children he had with Emily. They are Annie Emily, born 5th March 1910(?) in Haverhill, Rose Emma who was born 12th May 1915 in Woolwich, and Lily Alice, who was born in Poole on 30th June 1917.

Arthur deserted from the army, and secretly moved to live in Poole with Emily (see his page). This is where Annie would have grown up, and perhaps never knew of her Haverhill origins.

Annie married bricklayer Albert Edward Laws in 1931 in Poole(2). Albert was born in Branksome, Poole, on 22nd February 1908(4), the son of Albert Edward Laws, a gardener born in Bournemouth and Margaret Jane Still, originally of London.

The 1939 Register shows Annie and Albert living at 67a Rockley Road, Poole along with Alfred Miles, a bricklayers labourer around Albert's age(5).

Annie and Albert had one child (still living) in 1933.

Albert died in Mar 1986 in Poole(7), and Annie survived him by some fourteen years dying in November 2000 also in Poole(6). Annie is referred to as Anna, here, and her birth date is recorded as 5th March 1911 which was the same year her birth was registered and the same year implied by the 1911 census.
