Bio: Ann Piper was born in Haverhill, and first appears on the 1841 census living with her mother Charlotte and 3 siblings in Burton End. Her father is not present.
The 1851 census finds Ann living with her grandparents Daniel and Elizabeth Whiting in Burton end. Several months later she marries Jabez Whiting, a private in the Royal Marines. He was not a close relative of Ann's mother. Jabez Whiting was discharged from the Marines in 1855 on the grounds of ill-health; he had disease of the kidney.(4)
The current thinking (see Jabez's page) is that after being discharged from the Marines, he assumed the name 'James Whiting', starting a new life and re-joining the Royal Navy. It is thought he also married again, perhaps bigamously, in 1856 to Mary Jane Johnson, and had children with her in Pembroke and Portsea.
What we do not know, is what happened to Ann after their marriage in 1851.
